Western Approaches Museum

The Western Approaches Museum is as authentic a war museum as you're likely to find. Beneath Liverpool City Centre, this once top-secret bunker was the strategic hub where the Battle of the Atlantic was masterminded. It's barely changed since the doors closed in 1945! Visitors are able to wander from room to secret room, analysing original documents and tools which were used to pinpoint enemy locations and give the Allies the upper hand. There's even one of two surviving phones which had a direct line to Winston Churchill's infamous War Rooms!

To follow in the footsteps of the Fab Four (and you may as well, while you’re here!) visit the Cavern Club, a key chapter in their origin story. You might even catch a tribute band playing amongst the 60s memorabilia. Elsewhere on Mathew Street, Rubber Soul and Flanagan’s Apple are atmospheric pubs with live music. Want to line your belly first? Liverpool’s food quarter is a good place to start. This lively area by the waterfront has a great nightlife yearound. For more cool bars, hit up buzzy Albert Dock.

It doesn’t get more British than fish and chips, which you’ll find a lot of throughout The Pool. One of the most popular places to stuff yourself with this battered delicacy is Docklands Fish & Chips, a casual spot on Albert Dock. Beatles Mania

It seems the whole city of Liverpool – from Strawberry Fields to Penny Lane – is a testament to their four homegrown heroes. Look for the four bronze Beatles statues at Pier Head, which immortalizes the Fab Four in a walk along the Mersey. The Beatles Story is a must-see as the world’s largest permanent Beatles exhibition, and at the Museum of Liverpool you’ll see the bedspread used by John and Yoko during their 'bed in' for world peace. Mersey Ferry Cruise

Liverpool looks pretty cool from the water, and on a sunny day you can’t miss a ferry cruise up the Mersey. See the historical architecture and famous skyline from a new perspective and wave at the people strolling along the Mersey River waterfront. There’s onboard commentary that injects the facts straight into your ears as you go. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to plenty of attractions you’ll want to visit after, including Spaceport, U-boat Story, and The Beatles Story, located on the historical Albert Dock.

Otherwise, cycle through Childwall Woods or hit Croxteth Park for a picnic and some people-watching. Kids will love feeding the ducks!
