Not long after the first photo was captured, it was being used to capture major conflicts. From the 1849 siege of Rome by the French army to the Syrian civil war.
However, what constitutes war photography? We might pigeonhole it into purely war reporting, but it serves a number of military purposes. It can be turned into a weapon of combat and persuasion, or even a documentation and intelligence tool.
The exhibition focuses on the images produced as artworks and documents, but also on the context in which they were created, distributed and received, as well as their underlying intentions, with an ongoing consideration for their social, cultural, economic, political and military dimensions.
It also examines their aesthetic qualities by placing them in the artistic movements of their time, while showing the plastic posterity of images for which the primary purpose was essentially practical or documentary.
This exhibition is not recommended for visitors under 12 years old. The violent nature of some works and some documents may be offensive to visitors.

The Musée de l'Armee is part of a complex of buildings, home to museums and monuments, all relating to France's military history. A visit provides a fascinating look at prestigious old weapons, uniforms and armour. Napoleon Bonaparte's gilded tomb is also here, so be sure to pay your respects.
The Musée de l'Armee is located on Rue de Grenelle, at Paris's Les Invalides. It's a great spot in Paris’ 7th arrondissement, near Champs-de-Mars and the French National Assembly.
