Welcome to Antwerp

By the first half of the 14th century, Antwerp was the thriving trading and financial center of Western Europe, mostly due to its seaport and wool market. You’ll feel the history in its cobbled streets and extravagant buildings any time of year, but it’s better to visit in late spring when you get more sunlight for your money. September and October are good when the tourists are gone and the weather’s still nice.

Getting around

Put your best foot forward and walk, it’s the best way to get around Antwerp. You’ll discover a lot of fun stuff down little side streets on foot. It’s also easy to get around Antwerp on the tram, or by utilizing the city’s extensive red bike system. Hop on and pedal off from over 100 stations. The friendly locals will point the way if you get lost, or you could just get another waffle and enjoy the adventure.

The best waffles in Belgium

Fans of the crispy, sweet latticed snack known as ‘the waffle’ will rejoice in Antwerp - apparently it’s the best place in Belgium to enjoy one. In particular, people rave about The Smallest Waffle Shop In The World, where the three-euro waffles are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, filled with tiny sugary crystals that make each bite a dream. If your mouth is watering now, wait till you try one.

What to do in Antwerp for 3 days

Know your beer with Koninck Brewery

Hands up - who’s in Belgium for the beer? That makes most of us. The Koninck Brewery is one of the best places to make your acquaintance with the Belgian brew in Antwerp. Plug the audio tour in your ears and get a detailed rundown of the De Koninck brewing process, plus some cool facts about Antwerp's relationship with beer in general. Everyone loves the hanging bridge for a 360° view of the brewery. And you get two tasters. Cheers!

Visit the home of an artist at Rubenshuis

The globally-renowned artist Peter Paul Rubens mused over his masterpieces here until his death in 1640. Now in the museum, among an abundance of Baroque art, you can see Rubens’ restored self-portrait - back after an absence of over a year. What is he thinking in that picture with his eyes glazed, his cheeks flushed, and what appears to be lipstick on his mouth? What had he been doing? Thoughts on a postcard.

A chilling history lesson at Fort Breendonk

Turn back the clocks to one of the darkest chapters in European history. Fort Breendonk, deep in the Belgian countryside, was once a Nazi prison camp for Belgian resistance fighters, political dissidents, and Jews. See the art created by tortured souls in World War II, and explore memorials exhibiting colorful stories of resistance and courage. There’s a message of hope that runs throughout, which adds a bit of light to the darkness.

Bobbejaanland

If you’ve seen the sights, take your imagination to new heights at this fun-packed adventure park. Dedicated to the Flemish singer, guitarist and entertainer Bobbejaan Schoepen, Bobbejaanland is home to 40 rides and attractions. Take a journey into a volcano, watch a live show, ride a roller coaster through the treetops or soar through mysterious landscapes on The Dreamcatcher VR coaster - new for 2018. Kids will love it as much as you.
