As one of the most famous painters that ever lived, Vincent van Gogh's paintings are hot property. His paintings are scattered all over the world, from Paris to New York, but a huge portion of them, the largest in the world, is on display at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Everything from serene landscapes, beautiful still lifes, and revealing self-portraits are on show. You'll be able to see a version of his iconic Sunflowers; admire a painting close to Van Gogh's heart, The Potato Eaters; and get up close to one of three depictions of Van Gogh's own bedroom, Bedroom in Arles.
The Van Gogh Museum is located in the heart of Museumplein in Amsterdam.
Museumplein is one of the most beautiful areas in the city, with the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Stedelijk Museum all located there.
From Amsterdam Centraal Station, you can reach the Van Gogh Museum in 15 minutes by bike or tram.
The Van Gogh Museum displays over 200 of Vincent van Gogh's works, including landscapes, still lifes and drawings, and letters. By displaying them alongside works from Van Gogh's contemporaries, viewers get real insights into his life and work.
The museum itself is comprised of two buildings. The main building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, Joan van Dillen, and J. van Tricht, opened in 1973. The second building, designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa was added in 1999. Located in Amsterdam's Museumplein (along with the Stedelijk and Rijksmuseum), the Van Gogh Museum is one of the most-visited museums in the Netherlands.
