Lago Maggiore
Lago Maggiore is a big lake located in northern Italy on the south side of the Alps. It was once a haunt for the English royals, and before that, for Ernest Hemingway, who would take artistic inspiration from the idyllic Borromean Islands. Highlights now include a palace and a botanical garden.
The lake and its shoreline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy, and the Swiss canton of Ticino. Navigazione Isole Lago Maggiore is the starting point for passenger ferries to Borromean Islands and beyond.
