Verona is the city of star-crossed lovers and bushels of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s fun to walk around quoting Shakespeare, but to see more with zero transport worries, get yourself a Hop-on Hop-off bus pass covering two different sightseeing tours. See Piazza Bra, Castel San Pietro, Church of Saint Anastasia and even Juliet's house. Both lines leave from Piazza Bra, home to the Arena, and the annual Opera Festival. Likewise, the VeronaCard 24h gets you free, skip-the-line entry to Verona Arena and the city's other main museums, monuments, and churches for 24 hours.

Weather and when to go

The best time of the year to visit romantic Verona is around late May or early October. This is when the weather is generally warm, dry and sunny, but not the full blaze of summer. If you're looking for a less crowded scene with minimum Shakespeare fans clogging up the sites and souvenir shops, anytime in the spring and fall should suit. The Verona Arena Opera season runs from June through August, and here’s when you’ll catch some enchanting evening performances. The city can be crowded but if you plan ahead and prepare to get up early, you can still have parts to yourself.

The Verona Arena

The unmissable Verona Arena (aka Arena di Verona) was built in 30AD. This pink and white wonder once sat beyond the city walls, but the shows and games here drew spectators from all over the country and beyond. It’s now one of the best preserved ancient structures of its kind, and is still used for upscale operas and other shows with a maximum capacity of 15,000. That’s half the amount of people who’d cram in there in the 1st century, so if you see a sold-out show there these days, you can still enjoy some elbow room. Gardaland & Lake Garda

There are no Mickey Mouse ears required at the Disneyland of Italy! One of Europe’s largest amusement parks, Gardaland makes for a great escape if you’re traveling with a family who’s earned a break from historical ruins. Scream, and shriek on over 30 rides, including 7 roller coasters, 3 water rides, 4 dark rides and 3 flat thrill rides and take a walk around some of the picturesque Lake Garda, on the edge of the Dolomites. Garda spans 158km and is dotted with over 20 cute towns, from Riva del Garda in the north to Peschiera in the south.

Verona's UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Verona’s historical center is an international draw, thanks to Shakespeare. In fact, the city’s whole core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the famed 1st-century Verona Arena. While wandering, make sure to stop at Giulietta's Tomb and House. The 14th-century residence, with a tiny balcony overlooking a courtyard, is known to be ‘Juliet’s House’, the crowds of tourists all standing around pointing their cameras up at it makes it easy to find. You won’t see anyone appear, but you should check it off your ‘to see’ list anyway.
