Kameoka attractions

Shodai Forge is located in Kameoka in the Kyoto prefecture. It's the last dedicated swordsmithing forge in the Kyoto area, and it's here that visitors can learn about (and even get involved in) the traditional craft of sword and knife making under the expert guidance of a master swordsmith. It's a unique and essential cultural experience for anyone interested in the history of the Japanese samurai.

Around a 40-minute drive from Kyoto, this Kawasaki Sudare Workshop is home to a wealth of knowledge, traditional techniques, and expert craftspeople. Sudare have been used as sunshades and blindfolds in Kyoto since ancient times and can reduce the temperature in a room by up to 4°. Visitors to the workshop can see first-hand the traditional production of Japanese Sudare, and make their own using reeds and bamboo. The site includes an exhibition hall and a workshop, and machines that have been in use for over 50 years.
