Needing no introduction, Loch Ness is not only Scotland's most famous lake; it's arguably one of the most talked about lakes in the world. A deep, freshwater loch with a total surface area of 56.4 square kilometres set against the dramatic backdrop of the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness is also one of the most scenic lakes in the world. Numerous reported sightings of a giant prehistoric monster (affectionately known as Nessie) who lives in the murky depths of Loch Ness have immortalised the lake in popular culture, and made the lake a popular destination for monster hunters and sightseers alike.

Urquhart Castle was built on the site of an early medieval fortification, though the ruins you can see now date back between the 13th and 16th centuries. It is located beside Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland, and most people reach it by boat. The castle can also be accessed on the A82 road, 21 kilometres south-west of Inverness and 2 kilometres east of the village of Drumnadrochit.
