When to go to Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s famed Temple Street Night Market, elaborate temples, all-encompassing range of dining options and mountainous backdrop make it glorious any time of year. But the best weather is from October to early December. September tends to be around 28C, so tanning is more of an option then. April to June are wet, while peak typhoon season is from July to September.

Getting around Hong Kong

The way to get around Hong Kong is by Octopus. Not the kind with lashing tentacles (fortunately) – this kind of Octopus is a rechargeable, contactless card for the bus, minibus, ferry, Peak Tram, tram and MTR. You can top them up at all convenience stores, including 7/11 and Starbucks, or call an Uber if you prefer your home comforts. Top tip: MTR is the quickest and easiest way to get to the top attractions.

Eat, drink and party in Hong Kong

Traditional Hong Kong street food is the stuff dreams are made of – and it’s so cheap you can afford to try whatever you please. Look for curry fish balls, grilled squid tentacles, and sweet, sticky-on-your-lips pineapple buns. For cheap drinks, Stone Nullah Tavern’s happy hour pours dollar drinks between 5pm and 7pm. Brunch fans can head to Zuma on Sundays, or add a DJ to the mix at their Saturday Sessions.

No Disney die-hard will leave this Mickey-fest disappointed; there’s something new to rock everyone’s world here. Ride the Cinderella Carousel or Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Feel your stomach lurch on the Big Grizzly Runaway Mine Cars, or zoom off to Tomorrowland for wet-your-pants thrills on the Hyperspace Mountain ride. You can even meet Winnie-the-Pooh on a weirdly chilling dark-ride. He’s a long way from the Hundred Acre Wood out here.

No trip to Hong Kong is complete without soaking up the stupendous views from Victoria Peak. Take a book and a sandwich and plan to watch the world from up high for at least a few hours. The Peak is Hong Kong’s highest point and Peak Tower’s viewing terrace offers exceptional harbour views. The Peak Tram gets you there swiftly, but a 45-minute nature stroll through Pok Fu Lam Country Park trail will get you there with a sense of accomplishment.
