The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Van Gogh's Starry Night, Jackson Pollock's drip painting One: Number 31, 1950, and Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon are just a fraction of the masterpieces that line the halls of MoMA.

The greats of 19th and 20th-century art have found a home in Midtown Manhattan, and any visit is sure to leave you basking in the glow of works that have dominated culture since they were revealed to the world.

Alongside Monet's Water Lilies and Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, there's architecture, photography, painting, sculpture, design, and film to admire.

The Guggenheim

Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Guggenheim design is as much a work of art as what waits inside.

If you're looking for Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces and you don't want to fly all the way to Paris, then you'll find the US' most impressive collection here at the Guggenheim.

The museum is filled with masterpieces from the early 20th century with names like Kandinsky, Chagall, Cézanne, Braque, and Jean Metzinger all featuring in the Guggenheim's collection.

The Whitney Museum of American Art

In the early 20th century, the art world was heavily biased towards European art and older classics. The philanthropist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney wasn't having it. She started her own museum devoted to living American artists. It's prospered ever since, becoming a touchstone of artistic achievement of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Whitney houses 21,000 works by 3,000 artists across many media. You’ll find paintings, sculptures, drawings, videos, photography, and new media. Andy Warhol might be the most iconic name among the artists featured, but you’ll also get to meet other 20th-century titans such as Jasper Johns, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Edward Hopper.

Like most New Yorkers, the Whitney has moved around the city a lot. Its most recent move was in 2015 to a new Downtown building designed by Renzo Piano. The new building gives the Whitney more space than ever to showcase its massive collection of modern and contemporary American art.

Must sees in New York

Architects Michael Arad and Peter Walker designed the 9/11 Memorial. Their proposal, called Reflecting Absence, consists of two reflecting pools that sit in the footprints of the South and North Towers. They're fed by waterfalls (the largest manmade waterfalls in the United States) and surrounded by a forest of nearly 400 trees. The accompanying 9/11 Museum has an exhibition divided into three sections, the Day of 9/11, Before 9/11, and After 9/11. It uses artifacts, photos, and an extensively researched and well laid out collection to show how the events of 9/11 changed the world.

Designed by architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill - who also designed the Burj Khalifa - One World is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the sixth tallest building in the world. The One World Observatory - located on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors - doesn’t stop bringing the 'wow'; from the moment you enter the building, to its elevator rides, all the way up to the top of New York City.

The Empire State Building is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan at 5th Avenue and 34th Street. The building was completed on April 11, 1931 and is still the 5th tallest skyscraper in the United States. It is decorated in the Art Deco style — a popular form in the 1930s.
